1-Inch vs. 1.5-Inch Working Dog Collars

Collar width changes how a working dog collar sits on the neck, how much bulk the dog carries, and how the collar feels in the hand. A 1 inch collar and a 1.5 inch collar can both be useful working setups, but they are built for different priorities.

The right choice comes down to the dog, the job, the hardware, and how much collar you actually want around the neck.

What changes when you move from 1 inch to 1.5 inches?

The most obvious change is the amount of leather. A wider collar has more material across the neck and generally gives you a larger platform for heavier hardware, reinforcement, and a larger D-ring. A narrower collar reduces bulk and keeps the setup cleaner and lighter.

Width by itself does not tell you everything about strength. Leather weight, hardware, stitching, rivets, edge construction, and overall design still matter. Compare the complete collar rather than treating width as the only specification.

Why choose a 1 inch working collar?

A 1 inch collar makes sense when you want a traditional buckle collar with less bulk around the dog’s neck. It is a useful option for everyday handling, training, transport, and general-purpose wear where a full-width working collar is not necessary.

A 1.5 inch collar gives you more collar body and a more substantial feel. That extra width creates room for heavier construction and larger hardware without everything feeling crowded.

Our 1.5 Inch Flat Working Collar uses 20+ oz of full-grain leather, reinforced perimeter stitching, copper-rivet reinforcement, and a large D-ring. It is intentionally a heavier working collar rather than simply a wider version of a standard collar.

For handlers who want a more substantial collar for daily training, field work, and a larger working dog, the 1.5 inch format gives you more material and more structure.

Does a bigger dog always need the wider collar?

No. Dog size is only one part of the decision. Neck length, coat, working role, how long the collar stays on, the type of lead connection, and handler preference all matter.

A large dog can wear a 1 inch collar if that is the right setup for the job. A medium working dog may be perfectly comfortable in a 1.5 inch collar if the fit is correct and the handler wants the added structure.

Measure the dog rather than choosing from breed or weight alone. The buckle should close securely without forcing the collar too tight, and the collar should not interfere with normal movement.

Think about the job first

For normal daily wear, transport, routine training, and a lower-profile setup, start by looking at the 1 inch collar.

For a more substantial working collar with heavier construction and a larger overall platform, look at the 1.5 inch collar.
